BOOK COVERS | EDWARD GOREY
I've been looking for a copy of The American Puritans with the original Gorey cover art since I drooled over a mounted copy at the Edward Gorey House in 2015. Everything about it, to me, is perfect – the starkness of the landscape, the ominous but oddly hopeful pale pink sky, the hand lettering... it's New England at its most raw.
After a few years of sporadically poking around for either a copy of the book or a high-quality scan of the cover, I purchased a copy of the 1982 reprint for $10 on eBay and scanned it myself. Both for posterity and to create an iPhone SE (the most puritanical of iPhones)-specific lock screen.
RIP, Edward – I'll be sure the visit the Elephant House this summer if only to ask the curator, once again, if they'll ever reprint the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra "Sounds of the Summer '96" poster:
summer street 1904 | boston, ma.
The street I work on in 1904 – click to zoom. The Moneyweight Scale Co. is now a Dunkin Donuts. The French Carriage Co. is now a Sebastian's Cafe, and the Colonial National Bank is now a B. Good. Wonder what it'll look like 115 years from now?
PODCASTS | THE NAKED SCIENTISTS
The Naked Scientists was the first podcast I manually dragged on to my iPod back in 2006. They've been my go-to ever since. Dr. Chris Smith is a broadcasting legend.
